Employment Challenges Facing Young Australians with Disability

Finding a job can be tough for anyone. But for young Australians with disability, it is often like running a race where the hurdles are twice as high. Despite being eager, qualified, and ready to work, many face obstacles that simply should not exist. Together Now WA (TNWA) is committed to addressing these challenges and advocating for real change within our community.

More Than Just a Statistic

Young people with disability are three times more likely to be unemployed than their peers without disability. This is not just a number; it reflects countless stories of young people who are overlooked, underestimated, and denied opportunities. Employment is more than just a paycheck; it is about dignity, independence, and belonging. When young people are excluded from the workforce, they are also shut out from social networks, career growth, and financial stability. For young people with disability, underemployment is a harsh reality. Even when they secure work, it is often part-time, unstable, or in roles that do not match their skills.

What is Holding Them Back?

  • Employer prejudice – Stereotypes and misconceptions often cloud hiring decisions. Many employers mistakenly assume that hiring a person with disability is complicated or costly.
  • Ineffective employment services – Disability Employment Services (DES) are meant to help. However, young people often report feeling like they are just a number in the system, receiving one-size-fits-all advice instead of meaningful support.
  • Lack of school-to-work transition support – Moving from education to employment is already a challenge. For young people with disability, the absence of targeted programs and mentorship makes this leap even more daunting.

How We Can Change the Story

It is easy to point out problems, but what about solutions? Recent submissions to Australia’s Youth Engagement Strategy, including from Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA), offer clear recommendations:

  • Co-designed employment programs – Young people should not just be consulted; they should be involved in creating the solutions.
  • Mentorship opportunities – Having someone in your corner makes a world of difference.
  • Disability Standards for Employment – Ensuring workplaces are accessible and inclusive.
  • Reforming DES – Services should be tailored, respectful, and centred on the individual’s goals.

Change starts close to home. Here are ways we can all be part of the solution:

  1. Employers – Re-examine hiring practices and listen to what candidates need.
  2. Community Members – Advocate for young people with disability.
  3. Young People – Know your rights, seek out mentors, and ask for the adjustments you deserve.

At TNWA, we are working towards creating meaningful employment pathways through local partnerships, mentorship initiatives, and advocacy. Everyone deserves the chance to feel the pride of earning their own wage, building their future, and being part of something bigger.

To turn these ideas into real opportunities, TNWA is launching a Youth with Disabilities Program and we are hitting the pavement to make it happen!

On April 6, 2025, our dedicated team will be competing in the City of Joondalup Mullaloo Triathlon to raise essential funds for this initiative. Every kilometre our athletes complete brings us closer to providing:

  • Skill development workshops – Helping young people build tech skills, job readiness, and confidence.
  • Employment and work experience opportunities – Bridging the gap between education and stable employment.
  • Mentorship and peer support programs – Creating a support network that empowers young people to thrive.

Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive community.

Whether you’re seeking support, looking to volunteer, or want to contribute through donations, TNWA welcomes your involvement.
